Three unique situations, three unique lawns

by Janet Banks

You've spent the past few weeks doing battle with nature: digging, raking, hunting down weeds and sorting out the topsoil. You're finally ready to get your turf supply to complete the project and soak in the rewards. Unfortunately, buying turf isn't as simple as it may sound; fortunately, this article is going to give you the top breeds for three unique situations.

The low maintenance

Garden maintenance isn't for everyone. If you are looking to have a green garden without all the hard work, then look for Zoysia grass. It is a tough breed of grass, and highly resistant to heat (great for Australian gardens). Requiring no work through winter and being highly resilient in drought periods, it can't be beaten when looking for a low maintenance lawn.

The children's play area

There's nothing like having a great expanse of lawn for your children to play on. A lawn for children can be tough due to the high standards it needs to meet. It needs to be tough enough to stand up to the abuse from being trampled and squashed, while being soft enough to give the perfect bare feet feeling. Kikuyu grass is perfect for this. It has a brilliant bright green to light up the garden, is nice and soft to provide the perfect play mat for tiny bare feet and is very fast growing to help it recover from the use it will no doubt receive. Not only this, but it is a very adaptable breed of grass, meaning that it can grow in a wide range of soils. After all, looking after children is more than enough work without having to match a lawn to your soil type.

The one disadvantage to Kikuyu grass comes from one of its advantages. Due to the fast-growing nature of the grass, it does require regular mowing in the summer months, but with a lawn as nice as one with Kikuyu grass, this shouldn't prove to be much of a hardship at all.

The award winner

Perhaps to you, the joy of having a lawn is all about how it looks. You want the perfect shade of green to compliment the rest of your garden. While there are a number of things to take into consideration when getting that perfect lawn, if you are looking for an all-rounder then look no further than Couch grass. One of Australia's most popular lawn types for a reason, it benefits from a major advantage of many years of breeding to help improve the lawn. A fantastically vibrant green, fast growing and with numerous sub breeds to choose from, you can make sure you get the perfect lawn suited to your own needs.
